Michael J. Carnahan

Graduate Student Intern

I am a graduate student counselor earning my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Adams State University. I'm happy to be completing my clinical internship under supervision at A New Leaf Therapy. I bring a unique blend of lived experience, academic training, and prior work in residential addiction treatment at Choice House in Boulder. My therapeutic style draws primarily from existential and narrative therapy, with a focus on meaning, identity, and empowerment during times of grief, transition, or uncertainty. I also incorporate mindfulness and psychoeducation to help clients better understand and navigate their emotional landscape.

I have lived all over the front range - I grew up on a farm in Elbert, CO, and spent considerable time in Denver, Boulder, as well as the Colorado City/Rye area just south of Pueblo. I now live in Colorado Springs with my loyal and loving goldendoodle, Brady. When I’m not working or studying, I love watching arthouse films, snowboarding, and occasionally heading out on spontaneous road trips through our enchanting Rocky Mountains. I’m a big believer in the healing power of story, humor, and slowing down long enough to hear what your heart’s been trying to say.

Insurances I Accept:

Aetna, CHP+, Cigna, Medicaid, Private Pay

How I Work:

I see therapy as a conversation rooted in curiosity, honesty, and growth. My approach is grounded in applied philosophy — not just theories of the mind, but ideas that help us live better, more meaningful lives. In session, clients can expect a calm, nonjudgmental space where we explore the deeper questions: Who am I now? What matters most to me? What do I do with pain, regret, or uncertainty?
I believe that change doesn’t always arrive with a dramatic breakthrough — often, it’s the quiet process of becoming more aware, more honest, and more aligned with what gives life meaning. Whether we’re confronting grief, anxiety, or some significant life transition, my goal is to help you rediscover your agency and renew your sense of direction.
Therapy with me isn’t about being “fixed” — it’s about becoming more fully yourself, with support, warmth, and space to grow.
